Sculpture in the Garden

The sprawling botanical garden in Encinitas (230 Quail Gardens Drive) is featuring the sculpture work of 30 artists through the month of April. See the artwork, ranging from whimsical to abstract, set against a backdrop of dragon trees, rare fruit gardens, bamboo groves and ponds. All of the artwork is available for purchase and goes to fund the botanical garden. Admission to the botanical garden is $14 for adults and $8 for children.

San Diego Veterans Day Parade

Thousands of San Diegans will salute those who served our country on Saturday at the annual San Diego Veterans Parade. Locals will line the parade route, from Waterfront Park down N. Harbor Drive, as floats, cars and other processions travel the one-mile stretch. The 32nd annual parade will pass USS Midway and the B Street Pier before turning left on Pacific Highway. Guests can view the parade along the entire route, excluding some sections reserved for the parade, which is free to attend.

Viejas Outlet Center Ice Rink 

Viejas Casino & Resort has decked the halls and opened their outdoor ice rink for the winter season (which doesn’t officially begin until Dec. 21). Guests can take a spin on one of Southern California’s largest outdoor skating rinks for 90 minutes with the purchase of a $16 for adults and $14 ticket for kids 12 and under. Season passes are available for those who want to enjoy the rink time and time again. The ice rink is open from 3 to 10 p.m. on the weekends and 5 to 10 p.m. during the week through November excluding Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Check the schedule here before you go.

Tribute to Veterans – Inspiration Concert

Celebrate San Diego’s military with us at our first-ever Tribute to Veterans Concerts on Saturday, November 10, as we recognize and honor those who serve and have served our country. The La Mesa Historical Society, along with San Diego Home & Garden Lifestyle Magazine and Modern San Diego, presents the13th Annual Home Tour, “Modern Mud.” Modern Mud highlights Adobe, Classic, and Mid Century gems in La Mesa’s Eastridge and Mt. Nebo neighborhoods.

La Mesa Park Appreciation Day

The public is invited to participate in the 13th annual Park Appreciation Day on Saturday, October 13, 2018, 8:00 am to noon.  Park Appreciation Day provides volunteers the opportunity to give  back to their community and help beautify
La Mesa Parks by assisting in projects that include planting, picking up trash, raking, painting, trimming and weeding. Participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves and tools such as rakes, trowels, trimmers, shovels etc. All ages welcome!

Adams Avenue Street Fair

The 37th annual Adams Avenue Street Fair will feature more than 80 artists performing on six stages along Adams Avenue in Normal Heights.

This year’s headliners will include West London reggae/tropical pop sing Hollie Cook (daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook), and the roots-rockin’ Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics. In addition to the great variety of music, there will be a craft beer taste (Saturday only), four beer gardens, giant carnival rides, festival food and more than 300 exhibitors.

Grunion Run

It’s a spectacle to behold when thousands of grunion, slim silver fish, come out of the water and onto the shoreline to spawn. To see the natural event that happens only a handful of days throughout the year, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends heading to a San Diego County beach with a flashlight. Runs are expected through Sunday at various times but sightings are not guaranteed. Grunion sightings may occur at: Oceanside Pier View North Beach, Oceanside Harbor Beach, Del Mar Beach, La Jolla Shores, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Coronado and Coronado Shores Beach and Imperial Beach.

Festival of the Bells

This event celebrates the founding of Mission Basilica San Diego De Alcala nearly 250 years ago. The event will feature food, games and live entertainment at the historical landmark. All five of the mission’s bells will be rung during the weekend’s activities, including the original bell dating back to 1802.

Food Truck Fridays

Food trucks will swamp Balboa Park every Friday this summer. A lineup of about a dozen food trucks will rotate each week through September 28 at Plaza de Panama ready to feed hungry guests while listening to a variety of live music. Visitors are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit in front of the Botanical Building as they eat, or enjoy craft beer, wine and cocktails inside nearby restaurants. Booths will be set up with activities for kids and Balboa Park will introduce a “living room” area filled with giant lawn games. Surrounding museums will extend hours to accommodate guests and the San Diego Museum of Art will offer $5 admission after 5 p.m.

The Spreckels Organ Society lights up San Diego summer nights with the International Summer Organ Festival ­– an inspiring lineup of free outdoor concerts at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park, each designed to demonstrate the fresh sound of the historic 1914 Spreckels Organ, the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world.

The 2018 Festival features virtuoso performances by world-class organists, acclaimed string and organ duos, Rising Stars Night with 15-year-old twin organists, the always popular Spreckels Silent Movie Night, and Rocking Balboa: A Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin Tribute.

Tap that Glass

Surfside Tap Room, a craft beer store in Oceanside, is hosting a summer hangout party every Sunday night at their seaside location. The free dog- and family-friendly event features an array of food trucks, a DJ spinning tunes, and a selection of pop-up shops with local artisan goods. RSVP in advance.

Food Truck Fridays

Food trucks will swamp Balboa Park every Friday this summer. A lineup of about a dozen food trucks will rotate each week through September 28 at Plaza de Panama ready to feed hungry guests while listening to a variety of live music. Visitors are invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit in front of the Botanical Building as they eat, or enjoy craft beer, wine and cocktails inside nearby restaurants. Booths will be set up with activities for kids and Balboa Park will introduce a “living room” area filled with giant lawn games. Surrounding museums will extend hours to accommodate guests and the San Diego Museum of Art will offer $5 admission after 5 p.m.
