San Diego County Events for May 22 – 25

It’s Memorial Day Weekend; a day to remember all of those who died while serving in our country’s armed forces. When you’re spending time with your family this weekend, enjoying some of the Memorial Day Weekend activities and events, take some time to remember all that those who protect our country do!

San Diego county events this weekendRemembrance ceremony at the USS Midway

Before being turned into a maritime museum, “225,000 Midway sailors…served our country and upheld the American ideals of strength, freedom and peace” (USS Midway Museum, www.midway.org/visitors).

On Saturday, there will be a free remembrance ceremony paying tribute to World War II veterans. 9 a.m. on the USS Midway Museum. WWII veterans in person, live entertainment, a flyover, memorial wreath presentations and a San Diego Harbor Patrol water salute. All who attend will be able to tour the ship at no cost. When you visit the USS Midway, you’ll see 29 restored aircraft, the many locations where the sailors worked, ate and slept, and 60 different exhibits.

Cost: Free, with free entrance to the museum for those who attend. Normal museum entrance: $10 – $20; tickets online or at the door

Memorial service at Miramar National Cemetery

Memorial service at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive. The speakers will be Capt. Laura Scotty, assistant chief of staff for the commander, Navy Reserve Forces Command, and Joel Sollender of Poway, who served with Gen. George Patton’s 3rd Army on the Siegfried Line in northern France and was taken prisoner by a German Army tank crew for four months.

Annual Community Memorial Day Service

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will hold its annual community Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day, with Capt. Tim Eichler, the current Navy Region Southwest regional chaplain, speaking. (858) 755-1616

Ceremony at Cottonwood Creek Park

Ceremony will be at 10:45 a.m. at Cottonwood Creek Park, followed by an open house and food at Post 416, 210 W. F St. Hosted by the American Legion Post 416 and Encinitas Elks.
