Street Food Cinema: Outdoor Movie and Dinner

The Grossmont center is showing Jurassic Park and will welcome food trucks serving a variety of selections, from popcorn over ice cream to dinner entrées and more. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the movie begins at 8 p.m. To get the most fun out of Street Food Cinema, plan to arrive early to listen to live music and order dinner from one of the food vendors.

Valley Center Western Days

Each May, the Valley Center community celebrates its western heritage with a series of events including the Western Days Festival, Parade, Library kick-off party, Chili Cook-off, the election of Valley Center’s “Honorary Mayor”. The parade runs the length of Valley Center Road from Lilac Road, and then turn left onto Cole Grade Road, finishing up at the Elementary School where the annual festival is held. Vendors, games, food and entertainment can all be found at the largest community festival of the year.

Festival of the Sea

Festival of the Sea, produced by the Maritime Museum and sponsored by the Port of San Diego, will be held Memorial Day weekend and has something for everyone to enjoy. Taking place aboard several of the historic vessels of the Maritime Museum and on the adjacent scenic North Embarcadero region of downtown San Diego, Maritime Museum of San Diego will be open to the public Saturday, Sunday and Monday May 25 to 27 with special general admission hours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  General admission tickets for the three-day event include entrance to all vessels, exhibits, live music, education zone and artist exhibition with market.

Where: Takes place aboard several of the historic vessels of the Maritime Museum and on the adjacent scenic North Embarcadero region of downtown San Diego

Annual Butterfly Release

The free, family-friendly event features a special performance by children’s singer Kathryn the Grape, arts and crafts activities provided by San Diego Floral Association, and hourly butterfly releases around 11:30 a.m., 12:30, 1:30, and 2:30 p.m. Families can reserve a butterfly for a $5 donation, but live butterflies will also be distributed first-come first-served a few minutes before each release.

Mountain Man Rendezvous

Visit a “mountain man” encampment to meet characters from the North American Fur Trade era (1815-1840). See demonstrations of flint and steel fire-starting, archery, tomahawk & knife throwing, blackpowder shooting, trap setting, primitive cooking, and candle making. Listen to the stories of those who followed Lewis and Clark into the western mountains. Primitive camps, teepees, a blacksmith shop and period-dressed people will be ready to talk with you and show you around.

31st Annual Balboa Park Pow Wow

The Balboa Park Pow Wow showcases the heritage of American Indians. Participants of all ages will be present from American Indian tribes, drum groups. and communities, wearing ornate regalia. Kumeyaay singers will open the event both days with Birds Songs. Gourd Dancing will follow, and then the Grand Entry, which opens a day of inter-tribal dancing. Vendors will be selling handmade jewelry, pottery, basketry, clothing, fry bread, and Indian tacos.
