In celebration of Black History Month, the 25th annual Kuumba Fest returns Friday to the Lyceum Theatre in San Diego’s Horton Plaza. The three-day event celebrates black culture, history, cuisine and the arts, with a focus on African heritage. There will be a talent show, a fashion show, hip-hop dance and play performances, a soul food competition, and the annual gospel finale celebration.

San Diego Theater Week

35th Annual Adams Avenue Street Fair

Landlubbers Day

A celebration of all things pirate in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day. We encourage young and old to throw on their best pirate attire for a day of eye patches, parrots and walking the plank!

Held Saturday, September 17 from 1 to 4 p.m., the free event features live music from the Jackstraws, San Diego’s own pirate-themed band; a “Talk Like a Pirate” and costume contest; arts and crafts; a mermaid grotto with mermaids available for photos and pirate’s booty food and drink specials from the Seaport Village eateries.

San Marcos Serbian Food Festival

“The Serbian Church on Knob Hill opens its doors once again for their upcoming 5th Annual Serb Fest. In just over 2 weeks the St. Petka Serbian Orthodox Community of San Marcos will be showcasing their hospitality through food, religion, culture and wholesome family fun.

Parish Priest, Father Milovan Katanic says, ‘We invite all of our neighbors in San Marcos and the entire North County area, to come and sample a bit of our warm culture. Mira Mesa Street Fair

One of Mira Mesa’s busiest streets will transform into a blocks-long festival featuring booths, foods around the world, entertainment, a carnival and crafts and games. If you’re 21 or older, feel free to enjoy a beer garden near the food court and music stage. The family-friendly festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free.

Guided Nature Walk: Chicken Thief

Join an MTRP Trail Guide on a guided nature walk and learn about the plants, animals, geology, history, and ecology of the park on one of their scenic trails. These interpretive nature walks are offered to enhance your appreciation of the unique beauty of San Diego’s natural environment.

63rd Annual World Championship OTL | Over the Line

“Hosted each July by the Mission Bay Athletic Club (OMBAC), the annual sporting and merrymaking event typically draws about 1,200 teams from around the world to Mission Bay to partake in OTL, a bat and ball sport first played in Mission Beach in the 1950s” (nbcsandiego.com). Over The Line is a public event and requires no ticket or entrance fee to watch the games and enjoy the tournament. This weekend is the second and last weekend of OTL.

Latin American Art Festival

Latin American Art Festival is an annual event that presents outdoor exhibits, painting, sculpture, photography and printmaking among other disciplines, plus crafts, performing arts and culinary arts of Latin American countries.

It is the only festival of its kind in Southern California. It takes place during the month of March with the aim of bringing all residents of San Diego County, Orange County and Los Angeles, the artistic expressions of the Latin American community. Latin American Art Festival highlights the cultural richness of Latin America to strengthen the heritage and sense of belonging among the Hispanic community, showing the diversity of the communities to art enthusiasts, collectors and gallery owners on both sides of the border.

Inaugural Coronado Island Film Festival

The Coronado Island Film Festival is an inaugural event that celebrates Coronado’s connection to Old Hollywood and features celebrity guest Leonard Maltin.

Held from Friday, Jan. 15 to Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, the festival will show 85 films ranging from documentaries and war movies to comedies and Hollywood classics.

California Cartography At The La Jolla Map Museum: A Knowledge Commons San Diego Free Class

Knowledge Commons San Diego is a new free school for free thinkers. Unique free classes taught by San Diegans, for San Diegans. Join us for our Winter 2016 session!

We will embark on a fascinating journey through time and space, as Captain Cloward walks us through the collection, featuring maps right from the first millennium (we get to point and laugh at their zany ideas!), some of the earliest maps of the Americas, and even a few maps that show what the early explorers thought about California (you’ll be surprised!).

We’ll also get to view and discuss some early maps of San Diego. We’ll learn navigational techniques, map conservation techniques and more! This will be a history lesson unlike any other.
