San Diego County Events for January 4 – 6

It’s the first weekend of the new year; hopefully some of these events will help you pursue health, quality time with family, education or whatever resolution you’re pursuing in 2019!

The 3-day expo will take over downtown’s San Diego Convention Center Friday through Sunday. Three Decades in the Rearview

This retrospective exhibit, “Three Decades in the Rearview,” showcases a variety of unique vehicles that encapsulate the automotive culture including race cars, hot rods, low-riders and more. ArchaeoCon 2019

The Archaeological Institute of America turns 140 years old in 2019 and this expo at the Marriott Marquis will pretty much serve as the institute’s birthday bash. The fair will feature archaeology presentations, hands-on demos, workshops, an “ancient game tournament” centered on a board game from Mesopotamia, and Q&A sessions with experts.

Guided Nature Walk – Mission Trails Regional Park

Start your Sunday with a little nature walk at Mission Trails Regional Park. A trail guide will take visitors through one of three trails — the Oak Grove Loop, the Visitor Center Loop or the Riverside Grinding Rocks — while talking about the plants, animals, geology, history, and ecology of the park. These weekly guided walks are free and open to the public and begin at the Visitor Center.

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas

Holiday Food Truck Festival

For five days and evenings between Christmas and New Year’s Day, Dec. 26 to 30, the annual Holiday Food Truck Festival serves up gourmet food from 15 of San Diego’s top food trucks, along with free live entertainment and fun activities for families.

The ice rink will be open every day except Thanksgiving and Christmas from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM until Sunday, January 6th. All proceeds from the ice rink benefit the Rady Children’s Hospital’s Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.

Special Spreckels Organ Concert

To honor members of the Spreckels Organ Society and salute the 104th anniversary of the great Spreckels Organ, Raúl Prieto Ramírez will play a special concert at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 14. The concert will be free to the public, and members will be especially welcomed with free coffee or hot chocolate upon presentation of their valid membership card.

Musical selections will include the “audience choice” favorites of the past year: selections that Raúl has presented that were chosen for repeat performance by pavilion audiences.

Coronado’s Annual Holiday Parade

Coronado’s  43rd Annual Holiday Parade will happen tonight, Friday, Dec. 7, 2018 at 6 p.m.

This hometown parade is a true holiday tradition and thousands line the street each year to kick off the holiday season in style! The parade starts at 6 p.m., but many come early to Rotary Plaza to sing carols from 5-6 p.m. and anxiously await Santa’s arrival via fire truck. Once Santa arrives, one lucky local family is selected each year to help the Mayor flip the switch on Star Pine.

Rady Children’s Ice Rink in Liberty Station

Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary and Liberty Station welcome San Diegans to kick off the holiday season with outdoor ice skating at the Rady Children’s Ice Rink at Liberty Station beginning Saturday, November 17 and closing Sunday, January 6.

The outdoor rink will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Holiday Lights on Main Street

Prescott Promenade in El Cajon will look like a winter village as the annual Holiday Lights on Main Street festival takes over the outdoor courtyard. Dozens of local retailers will gather in the promenade to sell fashion and jewelry, art, books, delicious treats and more. Nearby, Santa will take pictures with visitors and guests can take to the ice for a skating session or some carnival rides. The event is in conjunction with Small Business Saturday, which invites people to “shop local” on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Stay until 6 p.m. to see the Christmas tree light up with holiday magic.

Surfin’ Santa

Santa Claus — in board shorts. The 13th annual Surfin’ Santa celebration brings the jolly fella to Seaport Village only, instead of a sleigh, Santa will arrive on a boat along the San Diego Bay. Once on land, visitors can pose with Santa before enjoying a parade and live performances along the bayside boardwalk. It is free to see Santa but Seaport Village encourages visitors to stick around and shop small at the many stores there as part of Small Business Saturday.

Sculpture in the Garden

The sprawling botanical garden in Encinitas (230 Quail Gardens Drive) is featuring the sculpture work of 30 artists through the month of April. See the artwork, ranging from whimsical to abstract, set against a backdrop of dragon trees, rare fruit gardens, bamboo groves and ponds. All of the artwork is available for purchase and goes to fund the botanical garden. Admission to the botanical garden is $14 for adults and $8 for children.

San Diego Veterans Day Parade

Thousands of San Diegans will salute those who served our country on Saturday at the annual San Diego Veterans Parade. Locals will line the parade route, from Waterfront Park down N. Harbor Drive, as floats, cars and other processions travel the one-mile stretch. The 32nd annual parade will pass USS Midway and the B Street Pier before turning left on Pacific Highway. Guests can view the parade along the entire route, excluding some sections reserved for the parade, which is free to attend.

Viejas Outlet Center Ice Rink 

Viejas Casino & Resort has decked the halls and opened their outdoor ice rink for the winter season (which doesn’t officially begin until Dec. 21). Guests can take a spin on one of Southern California’s largest outdoor skating rinks for 90 minutes with the purchase of a $16 for adults and $14 ticket for kids 12 and under. Season passes are available for those who want to enjoy the rink time and time again. The ice rink is open from 3 to 10 p.m. on the weekends and 5 to 10 p.m. during the week through November excluding Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Check the schedule here before you go.

Two unique Mid-Century Modern Adobes, a beautifully restored 1915 Craftsman, as well as Classic and Mid-Century styles will be featured.

The La Mesa Historical Society, along with San Diego Home & Garden Lifestyle Magazine and Modern San Diego, presents the13th Annual Home Tour, “Modern Mud.” Modern Mud highlights Adobe, Classic, and Mid Century gems in La Mesa’s Eastridge and Mt. Nebo neighborhoods.
